Home > Alien species in Slovenia > Alien plants
In Slovenia several invasive plant species are very widespread and locally form extensive stands. Often, they first establish on ruderal areas, along roads, in cities or at construction sites, where the primary vegetation has been removed. From there, alien plants can spread to (semi)natural areas, where they can have significant impact to biodiversity.
Many invasive plants can be observed in lowland areas, in particularly along waterways, where plants are spreading downstream with water, either as seeds or root fragments.
Below, you can see some of the plant species, which are subject to management in Slovenia. Some are already widespread, some only locally present and some still absent with a likelihood of entry to Slovenia.
Please note, that the species descriptions, which are linking on from the thumbnails have not been translated, but we will soon provide links to the English descriptions. The Slovenian descriptions are collected from several sources, provided at the bottom of each description.
Observation list: Includes selected alien species, which are relatively widespread in Slovenia and recognised as invasive. Reporting these species is important for monitoring their spread, planing of management measures and awareness raising.
Alert list: Includes potentially invasive alien species, which are likely to arrive in or spread to Slovenia in near future. Some of the alert list species are already present in Slovenia and locally forming larger populations, however with adequate measures their further spread could still be prevented.
