Alert list of alien species in forests

The first alert list of alien species in forests was made in 2017 in the framework of the LIFE ARTEMIS project. The list contains those alien species which are not yet present in Slovenia, but it is likely they could spread to our county in the near future. These species have already shown to be invasive in other countries and we therefore can expect them to be invasive also in Slovenia. The alert list also includes some species which are already locally present in Slovenia, however they would still be possible to eradicate.

Management of alien species should primarily be directed to prevention of introduction. However, if this fails, there should be a system in place which enables us to detect alien species in early stages of spread so that we can through rapid response measures prevent their further spread and damage. In the early warning and rapid response system (EWRR) we are in particularly directing monitoring efforts to those species which are most likely to spread to a particular country or region. The alert list is therefore a key background document of the EWRR system.

On the first alert list there are 12 species of alien fungi, 51 species of plants, 13 species of insects and 7 species of mammals.

  2. Alien fungi on the alert list
  3. Alien animals on the alert list

Criteria for including species on the alert list

1. The species can occur in forest habitats

2. The species is already invasive in counties with comparable climatic conditions and can be considered as potentially invasive in Slovenia.

3. The species is already present nearby Slovenia or is even already locally present but could still be eradicated.

4. The species is listed on the list of invasive alien species of EU concern for which Slovenia should in accordance with the EU Regulation No. 1143/2014 on the prevention and control of introduction and spread of invasive alien species establish an early warning and rapid response system.
